“I’m passionate about social mobility and helping people from low socio-economic backgrounds to reach their full potential. I believe that having a professional career empowers people to change their lives and opens doors to many other opportunities. For me, being part of Access Accountancy is about making a tangible difference and using my own experiences to provide insight which will ultimately benefit others who find themselves in a similar position.

I have first-hand experience of how difficult it can be to access professional careers without the right education or background. This ranges from basic careers advice, obtaining the necessary qualifications, drafting CVs and attending interviews. It can all be extremely overwhelming. However, support networks and mentorship can markedly change this.

Social mobility is not just about access to the profession, but also progression within it. One main change I would like to see in the next few years is more action to support individuals throughout their accounting careers, particularly around progression. It’s key that we create inclusive cultures where talent is nurtured, potential is recognised early, and progression is based on merit, not background.

For employers looking to improve their social mobility footprint, my advice is to:

  • Be open minded.
  • Be aware of unconscious bias.
  • Be curious.

In my role as trustee, I hope to bring a different perspective to Access Accountancy, informed by my own journey in the profession to champion more inclusive practices and drive lasting change which creates more accessible opportunities for the next generation of professionals.”
