“After joining the industry in 2023 after two decades in the digital sector, I was impressed by Access Accountancy’s vision and how well established it was. From seeing how much of a difference the programme makes for students wanting to pursue a career in accountancy, I knew I wanted to get involved. I’m passionate about helping to create meaningful opportunities for students and employers alike, while continuing to learn and grow alongside my own trainees. Every interaction I’ve had with individuals connected to Access Accountancy has been a reminder of the care, commitment and collaboration required to try and level the playing field for children and young people.
During my career, I have spoken to many students, their families and teachers, and there are still many challenges that prevent equal access to opportunity. As someone with a background in IT, I don’t think the concept of digital poverty is recognised enough, but I always try to remember everyone’s circumstances are different. There are many who simply don’t have access to tools and systems which others take for granted. I have participated in recycling and redistribution programmes of old technology to help tackle this issue, but we still have much more to do.
In addition to addressing digital poverty, increasing awareness of career opportunities for students across the UK, especially outside of major cities is key. We also need to reach and educate their support networks, who can help to open doors and reinforce outdated perceptions that our profession is only accessible to those with a university degree. Insight days, work experience and shadowing can all help to demystify misconception and demonstrate the many different routes into accountancy.
For employers looking to improve their social mobility footprint, my advice would be:
- Be understanding.
- Be a voice for those who don’t have one.
- One size doesn’t fit all – so do be flexible in everything you do.
Moving forward, we need to continue to push for wider industry collaboration between accountancy firms of all sizes, to ensure we are inclusive and supporting talent, whatever their background.”
