Mahmood said: “I’ve been inspired by the work done by those who have driven the creation and development of Access Accountancy, and by those who helped me succeed in my career despite my background.

“My childhood home was on a challenging estate where we had little money. Gaining access to educational and career support was very difficult, which makes me determined that the profession continues to make itself as accessible as possible.

“The accountancy profession is improving its recruitment practices to provide better access to those from low socio-economic backgrounds. However, there is more to be done to ensure a greater number of employers are committed to this. Action also needs to be taken to ensure those from low socio-economic backgrounds have an equal chance to progress to senior roles.

“I hope my personal and professional experience will contribute to widening the organisation’s impact as we build on the great work done by our predecessors as office holders for Access Accountancy.

“My top three tips for employers looking to improve and support social mobility would be:

  • ensuring senior management is bought in to the idea and to communicate the importance of social mobility appropriately;
  • engage HR professionals within your team on the purpose and benefits of social mobility;
  • energise trainees and qualified staff to act as ambassadors for the organisation externally.”
