Work Experience Toolkit launched to support employers

Employers involved with Access Accountancy have collaborated to share their learnings, knowledge and expertise to create a comprehensive Work Experience Toolkit.

The aim of this toolkit is to help employers develop and improve their programmes to remove biases and barriers that may impact individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds. The toolkit addresses common areas employers look to improve, including the programme itself, marketing and attraction, and the selection process.

The following are a selection of topics which showcase the type of the guidance contained within the toolkit:

  1. Social Mobility: To cultivate a diverse talent pipeline, ensure your work experience programme is strategically aligned with subsequent career opportunities, such as apprenticeships, by considering the entry criteria, timing, and focus. Question whether the work experience programme effectively positions candidates to take these next steps.
  2. Flexible Delivery Models: Embrace the flexibility of face-to-face, virtual, or hybrid delivery models for work experience. Assess the advantages and challenges of each to find the best fit for your organisational capabilities and the needs of participants.
  3. Dynamic Work Experience Activities: A robust work experience programme transcends traditional placements. Incorporate a mix of activities like talks, workshops, site visits, and coaching, alongside project-based work that offers real-world insights and skill development tailored to your industry or team.
  4. Accessibility and Support: Commit to making your work experience programme truly accessible. Consider providing support for travel, attire, technology, and meals, and address barriers that may prevent low-income participants from engaging fully. Be mindful of diversity and inclusion, accommodating different religious practices and learning needs.
  5. Candidate Support and Feedback: Craft a supportive journey for participants, starting with a warm induction and welcome pack. Establish a feedback loop with pre- and post-programme surveys to foster continuous improvement and ensure the programme meets the evolving needs of candidates.
  6. Volunteer Engagement and Clarity: When involving volunteers in your programme, provide comprehensive briefings through webinars, seminars, or documents. Clearly define their roles and the specific skills or knowledge they need to contribute effectively to the opportunity.
